12 Things You Can Do To Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer

  1. Get familiar with the look & feel of your breasts. This will help you notice any changes. Call your doctor if you notice changes.

  2. Have regular breast exams by your doctor or nurse. Ask your doctor how often you should get them.

  3. Screen regularly with mammograms talk with your healthcare provider to book your mammogram.

  4. Limit alcohol use to 1 drink a day or less. If you don’t drink alcohol, don’t start.

  5. Breastfeed. It may lower the risk of breast cancer.

  6. Eat a healthy, low-fat diet that includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, soy foods, and flaxseed.

  7. Maintain a healthy weight for your body type and height.

  8. Exercise regularly for 30 minutes every day if you can or most days of the week. Break this up into three 10 minute sessions.

  9. Limit hormone therapy use for menopausal symptoms to 3 to 5 years, or less.

  10. Know and act on your family health history, it's an important way to protect your health. Collect your family health history and share it with your doctor for more ways to lower risk.
